A Reminder of the TRUE Meaning of Philanthropy

We talk so much about money and revenue as part of the definition of philanthropy.  And I’m more guilty of it than most. But a reminder of the true meaning and value of philanthropy was recently discussed in a Chronicle of Philanthropy article by Lucy Bernholz that highlighted the amazing work of people we don’t often enough associate with our non-profit world.

Bernholz recently released a book called “How We Give Now: a philanthropic guide for the rest of us” that highlights her travel across the United States speaking to groups of low-income and working-class people who donate so much of themselves to help their communities. And the most important takeaway is that it isn’t the money that these very generous people give, but it centers on their effort, time, wisdom, and dedicated service.  And it turns out their self-image is that they, too, are philanthropists.

When I look back at my podcast or blogs, they are so much driven toward monetary issues. But it’s critical to always remember what philanthropy means. Its definition, back to the Greeks and the Romans, is “love of mankind.” It doesn’t mean money. It means making the world a better place. It means helping others with whatever is needed.

I think I’m going to keep the article up on my bulletin board in my office as a reminder. And I’m probably going to find a way to get a copy of that book…..and enjoy reading it because it will be a constant reminder of what we’re all trying to accomplish:  making our communities just a little bit better for all, even without writing a check.  The BEST gifts come from the heart and don’t really cost a thing.  A lesson we can all be reminded of more often.
